Bocairent-Ontinyent-Xátiva

I was in two minds about the plan for today. The original idea was to split the trip to Xátiva into two shortish days, stopping in aeola de malferit overnight. However when I looked at the map again in the light of my experience yesterday I could see that there was no real route that I could take once past Ontinyent apart from a busy road. Then I had the bright idea of staying in Bocairent in the nice hotel for another night and walking to Ontinyent to catch the train to Xátiva.
Of course what I had forgotten was that there is a general strike in Spain tomorrow so no trains will be running.
Showing remarkable agility of mind I changed it again and decided to do it today.
The walk out of Bocairent was excellent; up a steep winding path to the ermita de santo cristo, with the stations of the cross marking the route. After the church a walk over bare mountain top, very different to yesterday's walking through wooded country. Then down through a dramatic gorge to the road into Ontinyent.
I got to the station in plenty of time for the train at 3:46. Three quarters of an hour later I'm in the bustling town of Xátiva, in a hotel room which stinks of smoke. Shortly I'll go to find some food.
That's the end of this stage of the route. I don't much feel like carrying on at the moment but I'll probably have forgotten all about the pain in a couple of years time.
Thanks to everyone who's posted comments: it gladdens my heart to read them.

  • You fail to mention that Xativa isn't actually on the GR7 so that you're not'giving up'by taking the train!! These things are important to your supporters!!! We would also appreciate a summary of distance walked/distance still to go to Istanbul or wherever it ends!!!

Congratulations on making such short work of this leg of the walk - at least that's what it seemed like to those of us who didn't have to walk! Now you can join in the Spanish general strike, and then treat yourself to a few days holiday!!

  • Well done, we have followed your journey every day. When I have been walking the dog in the mornings up hill and down valley I have been trying to imagine the different scenery you are surrounded by, here it is green, the bluebells, primroses and other spring flowers are coming out during this lovely sunny spell. I hope your hands, feet and clothes are all recovering and you enjoy a couple of days rest. (Frankie was going to ask you "how are your feet" Spanish but I can't remember what she said. Just to make you feel better, we (well not Frankie) have been trying to cover the Cotswold Way for the past 3 years at least, just doing round walks you understand, but haven't even done half of it! How lame are we. Safe journey home. Sherrill, Alan and Frankie x

  • Congrats Dave!
Have tried to post before - but failed miserably. Will try an anonymous identity . . .

I've enjoyed your blog, and feel sure your soul has been enriched by this further leg of your pilgrimage, despite(or maybe because of)the trials and lacerations dished out to your aching body.

    See you back in blighty!

  • Well Done Wayfarer!

He who would valiant be ’gainst all disaster,
Let him in constancy follow the GR7er.
There’s no discouragement shall make him once relent
His first avowed intent to be a wayfarer.

after John Bunyon (even if it doesnt quite scan)

    see you on monday -J

  • Yo camino entre triunfos, tambien entre fracasos.
Y enfrento cada día, tener que continuar.
aunque a veces son lentos, y cansados mis pasos,
no hay quien me detenga, tratando de alcanzar.

Enhorabuena! Echaremos de menos al inglés paseando por caminos improvisados...A bit late though, quite dissapointed for being late in the post. I forgot the strike would strike you too...Besazos!
